Gold iPad Guide: Luxury Customization, Wi-Fi vs Cellular and Gift Ideas
A gold iPad from GoldPrivé is a factory-new Apple iPad whose aluminium back and sides are plated 5 to 7 microns thick in 24K gold, rose gold or platinum, while the screen, cameras, chip and software stay exactly as Apple made them. This guide compares the three models we plate, explains why the Wi-Fi vs Cellular question is already answered for you, and shows how to turn one into a gift that feels personal.
GoldPrivé customizes three tablets: iPad Pro (M5), iPad Air (M4) and iPad mini (A17 Pro). Each is plated on the exterior only, offered in 24K gold, rose gold or platinum, and supplied as a Wi-Fi + Cellular model with 5G on eSIM. Choose the mini for one-hand reading, the Air for balance, and the Pro for Face ID, Thunderbolt and up to 2TB.
- Three models, three metals. iPad Pro, iPad Air and iPad mini, each in 24K gold, rose gold or platinum.
- Always cellular. Every gold iPad we supply is Wi-Fi + Cellular, which also brings GPS/GNSS location.
- Exterior only. Back and sides are plated; display glass and camera lenses are never covered.
- Made to order. Engraving, a GoldPrivé leather box and a verifiable certificate make it gift-ready.
1The three gold iPads compared
The table below combines Apple’s published specifications with the configurations GoldPrivé actually offers on each live product listing. Note the storage row: our range does not mirror Apple’s exactly, because some base capacities are not offered in gold.

Apple figures from its iPad mini, iPad Air and iPad Pro specification pages. GoldPrivé prices update live from our store and include the new device; all three metals cost the same within a model.
Worked example: matching memory to storage on the Pro
On iPad Pro (M5), memory follows storage. Apple’s 256GB model is not offered in gold, so the smallest gold Pro is 512GB with 12GB of memory. Step up to 1TB and you get 16GB of memory as well as double the space; 2TB keeps 16GB. If the owner edits large video or photo libraries, the 1TB gold Pro is the configuration where both numbers rise together. Pricing for each step is shown live on the gold iPad Pro listing, topping out at $ 6,190.
2Wi-Fi vs Cellular on a gold iPad
At Apple, Wi-Fi vs Cellular is the biggest decision after size and storage. At GoldPrivé it is settled: every new gold iPad Pro, iPad Air and iPad mini we supply is the Wi-Fi + Cellular model. So the real question is what cellular adds, and whether anything changes once the tablet is wrapped in metal.
What every iPad has
- Wi-Fi (Wi-Fi 7 on Pro and Air, Wi-Fi 6E on mini)
- Bluetooth
- Location from Wi-Fi, digital compass and iBeacon
What cellular adds
- 5G and Gigabit LTE data on eSIM, no physical SIM
- GPS/GNSS for navigation away from Wi-Fi
- Its own location signal for Find My
- Room to store eight or more eSIMs for travel
According to Apple, cellular plans are available from carrier partners in over 190 countries and regions, and the iPad connects to them through eSIM rather than a SIM tray. Apple’s eSIM guide lists several ways to activate a plan, including carrier activation, a QR code, a carrier app or joining an existing iPhone plan. The iPad mini spec sheet describes cellular as data only, so it is not a phone line; Apple instead lets an iPad relay cellular calls from a nearby iPhone through the Phone app.
The cost in weight is negligible. Apple lists the 11-inch iPad Pro at 444 grams for Wi-Fi and 446 grams for Wi-Fi + Cellular, and the 13-inch iPad Air at 616 versus 617 grams. Plating adds a little mass on top, which is why our listings do not quote Apple’s weight for gold models.
Does gold plating affect Wi-Fi, 5G or Apple Pencil?
It can, slightly, and our product pages say so plainly: a metal finish may slightly affect Wi-Fi and mobile signal, and the way Apple Pencil pairs and charges magnetically on the edge. If any of those is critical, raise it with your consultant while the commission is being agreed. For the wider question of how metal finishes interact with wireless features on phones, see our MagSafe and wireless charging explainer.
Already own a Wi-Fi-only iPad? The listings also offer a client-supplied device option, so your consultant can confirm whether your own tablet can be plated instead of a new one.
3What is plated and what is not
GoldPrivé works on the surface only. On all three models the aluminium back and sides are plated 5 to 7 microns thick; on the Pro the finish continues across the raised camera plateau, while on the Air and mini a matching ring circles the single rear camera. Apple’s logo and the word “iPad” stay legible, and the GoldPrivé mark sits low on the back.
CONFIRMED: from GoldPrivé listings and policies
- Not plated: display glass, camera lenses, flash and (on Pro) the LiDAR Scanner.
- Unchanged: chip, screen, battery, cameras, speakers and software; iPadOS updates arrive normally and Apple Intelligence is supported.
- Water: Apple publishes no water rating for iPad, and a customized device is not water resistant. Keep liquids away.
- Cover: our warranty gives 2 years on the customization and 1 year on the device; liquid damage voids it.
- Aftercare: GoldPrivé Care offers a resell refresh, or recustomization with fresh plating for gifting.
Day-to-day care is simple: a soft, dry, lint-free cloth, no abrasive or chemical cleaners, and perfume or hand cream allowed to settle before you handle the tablet. If you want to understand what wears a plated surface over time, read how long gold plating lasts and what affects it.
4Choosing a gold iPad: mini, Air or Pro
Compact
Gold iPad mini
195.4 by 134.8 mm and sized for one hand: reading, notes and sketching with Apple Pencil Pro. A single 256GB configuration keeps the choice simple, so the decision is the metal.
Balanced
Gold iPad Air
A full-size screen at 11 or 13 inches, M4 power and Touch ID in a 6.1 mm case. The sensible pick for someone who wants a large canvas without paying for Pro-only features.
Flagship
Gold iPad Pro
Tandem OLED with ProMotion, Face ID, Thunderbolt and up to 2TB. For an owner whose tablet is a studio, briefing folder and cinema in turn.
All three sit together in our 24K gold iPad collection. If the recipient works mainly at a desk with a keyboard, compare the laptop route in gold MacBook Pro vs gold MacBook Air before deciding.
5Gold iPad gift ideas
The broad, flat back of an iPad is one of the best engraving surfaces in our range. Each listing accepts a monogram, a full name, a handwritten signature, a photograph, original artwork or a corporate logo, with every design checked for feasibility and approved with your consultant before production.
Ideas that use what the iPad does well
- The reader’s gift: a rose gold iPad mini engraved with initials, for someone who reads in bed or on flights.
- The traveller’s gift: a platinum iPad Air; cellular and eSIM mean it can get online on arrival without hunting for hotel Wi-Fi.
- The creator’s gift: a 24K gold iPad Pro at 1TB or 2TB, engraved with the owner’s signature or a piece of their own artwork.
- The corporate gift: iPads engraved with a company logo for partners or milestone awards; because metal does not change the price within a model, a mixed set of 24K gold, rose gold and platinum costs the same as a matched one.
Every gold iPad arrives in a GoldPrivé leather box with a gift bag, Apple’s paperwork and supplied accessories, and a certificate of authenticity that can be checked on our product verification page. Pieces are made to order and reserved with a 50% deposit or paid in full; once production starts the commission is final, so settle engraving artwork early if the gift has a fixed date.

6Questions buyers ask
- Can I order a Wi-Fi-only gold iPad?
- New gold iPads from GoldPrivé are supplied as Wi-Fi + Cellular models only. If you already own a Wi-Fi-only iPad, the listings offer a client-supplied device option that your consultant can assess.
- Do I need a SIM card for a cellular gold iPad?
- No. Current iPad Pro, iPad Air and iPad mini cellular models use eSIM only and do not accept physical SIM cards. Using cellular data is optional; without a plan the iPad simply works over Wi-Fi.
- Will gold plating affect Apple Pencil?
- It may slightly affect how Apple Pencil pairs and charges magnetically on the edge, and may slightly affect Wi-Fi and mobile signal. Mention it to your consultant before the commission is confirmed if it matters to you.
- Is a gold iPad water resistant?
- No. Apple publishes no water rating for iPad, a customized device is not water resistant, and liquid damage voids the GoldPrivé warranty.
- Does a gold iPad still get iPadOS updates?
- Yes. The chip and software are untouched, so iPadOS updates arrive as normal and Apple Intelligence is supported.
